French Bulldog: Care, Temperament and Health Issues

The French Bulldog is one of the most popular breeds in the world: affectionate, social and perfect for apartment living. But its compact body and flat little face come with some health predispositions worth knowing —before and during life with a Frenchie. This guide is a general reference; your vet always has the final word.

French Bulldog temperament

It’s a companion dog through and through: attached to its family, good with kids and other pets, and not very barky. It needs little intense activity but lots of attention —it doesn’t like being left alone for too long. Stubborn, but it learns well with positive reinforcement and short sessions.

Common health issues

The Frenchie is brachycephalic (short skull), and that’s the source of several of its predispositions. Knowing them helps you spot warning signs early:

  • Brachycephalic syndrome: narrow airways causing snoring, fatigue and trouble breathing in heat or with exercise.
  • Heatstroke: they regulate temperature poorly. Heat is their biggest enemy.
  • Skin and folds: dermatitis in facial folds and skin allergies.
  • Spine: disc herniations and vertebral malformations (hemivertebrae).
  • Eyes: corneal ulcers and dry eye from their prominent eyes.
  • Reproduction: they often need a C-section due to head size.

Key day-to-day care

  • Avoid heat: walk early or at night, never in midday sun, and never leave it in a car.
  • Moderate exercise: short walks and gentle play. Not a marathon runner or a swimmer (they sink easily).
  • Watch the weight: extra pounds worsen breathing and the back.
  • Clean the folds: dry the face well after eating or drinking.
  • Regular check-ups: breathing, skin, eyes and spine.
Signs to see the vet right away: very noisy breathing or a bluish tongue, fainting, persistent coughing, or sudden limping/back pain.

Keep its health on track with Furtale

Because of its predispositions, the French Bulldog benefits greatly from a tidy medical history: note its brachycephalic syndrome or any condition in the congenital conditions field, track its weight to watch for excess pounds, and turn on vaccine and check-up reminders.
